Marcelo Rueda Dance Technique All Thursdays 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Starting Thursday February 7 , 2008 About the workshop It is a distinctly contemporary take on technique. This unique style blends modern and contemporary techniques within the frame provided by the study of musicality in constant exploration of the floor and the surrounding space. The class emphasizes the connection to and use of the floor, and encourages an awareness of the whole body as a way to learn and to develop dynamic, articulate and expressive dancing. This class focuses on integrating the use of torso and limbs; articulation of different body parts; alignment; and use of energy, weight, and space. Dancers work on physicality, centering, musicality, and clarity of movement. Different sources of movement are explored, with a strong focus on internal/external motivation. The class comprises centre work, and movement across the floor, including jumps. We will compose phrases of movement that involve moving boldly, covering lots of space, taking chances and finding our uniqueness as dancers. About Marcelo Rueda was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. Co-founder of DANZA COMUN (www.danzacomun.com), holds a BFA in Sociology from Colombia’s National University and a Certificate from the Professional Studies Program given by the Jose Limon Dance Foundation. From 2004-2007 has received grants from the Fulbright Comission and the Limón Institute to study technique and choreography in New York City, and recently from UNESCO in order to develop his own choreography in India. Mr. Rueda’s work has been presented in several international festivals in Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela, Switzerland, India and the U.S. He has been teaching dance professionally since 1997 to different audiences including actors and dancers from universities and high schools. Currently occupies a position as Future Faculty Fellow at Temple University’s Department of Dance. He lives in Philadelphia. Fee: $12/single class; $10/single class when signed up for four classes.
